devlog 0

Hello! Testing, testing, can anyone hear me :0

First dev log!! Wow this is so exciting! I've wanted to work on a narrative-focused game for the longest time, and as a baby game dev still figuring things out, starting with an interactive fiction feels right to me. For now, I only have the introduction done, but I'm super comfortable with how ink works now, so it's only up from here! It's all very rudimentary, but I'm really excited to work on this as a little mini passion project. I am dedicated to making this something that feels cohesive and compelling!

While the first game I ever tried my hand at developing was in Ren'Py, I'm excited to get a lot deeper into the writing side of things with this project. I really want to focus on the narrative, world building, and prose before getting to the polish. Currently been practicing quite a bit in aseprite!

All the endings and characters are pretty much planned for. The fun part starts now: the actual writing and discovering! There's parts of the world and plot lines I really want to discover for myself as I develop this game, and I'm really excited to get to these choices in the game. For now, I really want to focus on having these separate parts of the story feel as fleshed out as possible.

This is a little, small thing right now, but it feels like the first step to many more projects to come! <3

To hold myself accountable, the next dev log shouldn't happen until after I have the entire base narrative written. I really want to focus on just writing, but I'm equally excited to get to the other aspects of this projects!

Learnings:

  • used Ink for the first time! pretty straightforward language, but might try out twine for next game for more customization?
  • figuring out the pace of when I want each paragraph -> lots of dramatic pauses, minimize lengthy paragraphs
  • mapping out a CCYA story doesn't need to look like a giant flow chart! follow the thread of the narrative. dive deep, not shallow

On the horizon:

  • flesh out the aesthetic of the game
  • pixel and digital static assets accompanying the narrative
  • add music
